A mirror is often chosen as an object: a frame, a shape and a size that seem right for an empty piece of wall. The reflection can be forgotten until the mirror is already in place. It may show a crowded doorway, catch an uncomfortable view of a light or make a useful private corner visible from another part of the home. Before committing to a position, decide what you want to see in it. The useful comparison includes the room in ordinary use, not only the mirror viewed straight on from the centre of an empty floor.

Name the mirror's main purpose

Decide whether the mirror is for checking an outfit, enjoying a view within the room or adding a decorative surface. One item may serve more than one purpose, but each creates a different question about position. An outfit mirror needs a useful viewing place, while a decorative mirror may be enjoyed mainly from a chair across the room.

Avoid beginning with a promise that any mirror will make the room feel a particular size or brightness. Those impressions depend on the actual space and your preference. Start with a concrete role that can be assessed: a clear view of an outfit, a reflection of a favourite corner or an arrangement you enjoy from the place you spend time.

Study the proposed reflection at several ordinary times

Observe the area opposite the intended position in the light you normally use. A window, lamp or doorway can look different through the day and evening. You do not need a technical lighting assessment to notice whether a view is pleasant to you, but you should avoid assuming that one bright afternoon represents every time the room is occupied.

Keep the existing room in its ordinary state during the comparison. A reflection of a desk with papers or an entryway with shoes may be more realistic than a carefully emptied corner. Decide whether that everyday view belongs in the reflection before buying a mirror to show it more prominently.

Include the places where people actually sit

Look from the sofa, chair or table normally used in the room. The view available while seated can differ from the view seen while standing directly in front of the wall. Notice whether the proposed reflection would show a pleasing part of the room or a detail you would rather not give extra attention.

An outfit-checking mirror may have a useful standing position that is separate from the main seated view. Both can be considered. You do not have to make one mirror perform every role perfectly, but understanding the tradeoff before installation makes a deliberate choice easier than discovering it afterward.

Consider the doorway view

Check what becomes visible from the entrance and any ordinary route through the room. A mirror can introduce a view of another area that was not obvious before. Decide whether you are comfortable with that relationship in your own home, particularly where a bedroom, work surface or personal storage area is involved.

Keep this as a practical observation about the room rather than a reason to eliminate every reflection. A different position or a different intended role may be enough. The point is to choose the view knowingly, instead of treating the frame as the only part of the purchase that affects the space.

Respect the actual product and installation requirements

Read the mirror's instructions and establish its intended installation or placement method. A product designed for one arrangement should not automatically be leaned, hung or supported in another. Where the product, supporting surface or installation requirements are unclear, obtain appropriate product or professional advice before moving it into use.

Do not improvise fixings or use a temporary physical arrangement that conflicts with the mirror's guidance merely to assess a photograph. Planning the reflection can be done by observing the room and its sightlines before an installation decision is made. The actual maker's instructions remain more important than the way a similar object appears in an inspiration image.

Check the working space around the mirror

Consider doors, furniture and the route needed to use the mirror for its main purpose. A position can provide a pleasing reflection while being awkward for an outfit check because the necessary standing space is occupied. Similarly, a nearby table may become an unintended collecting place simply because it sits beneath the mirror.

Use an ordinary room plan or measurements appropriate to the task, without assuming a nominal product width tells the whole story. The mirror, its required placement and the people using the surrounding area all belong in the arrangement. A clear practical role can be more valuable than filling the largest available wall space.

Decide what stays in the reflected area

If the mirror is mainly decorative, choose a reflection you can enjoy in ordinary use without repeatedly rebuilding the opposite side of the room. A favourite plant, a familiar chair or a quieter wall may be enough. A mirror should not require another roomful of purchases just to create an acceptable view.

Must a mirror face a window? No; compare the actual reflected view and your purpose. Does a larger mirror automatically work better? Only if its size, requirements and role suit the space. Should an uncomfortable light reflection be ignored because the frame looks right? Consider another arrangement. The successful position is the one whose view, practical use and appropriate installation make sense together.
